Plumbing Leaks: Make Every Drop Count

Did you know that an American home can waste, on average, more than 10,000 gallons of water every year due to running toilets, dripping faucets, and other household leaks?

Nationwide, more than 1 trillion gallons of water leak from U.S. homes each year. That’s why WaterSense reminds Americans to check their plumbing fixtures and irrigation systems each year during Fix a Leak Week.

If you hear that toliet running or hear that faucet dripping, it can be more than annoying. It could be wasting water.  In fact, WaterSense estimates that 10% of homes that waster more than 90 gallons of water per day.  That equals more than 30,000 gallons of water a year. Common leaks include faucets, showers and don’t forget that outside hose!  A faucet that drips once per second can waste upwards of 300 gallons of water a year.

WaterSense provides many resources on how to check for all these leaks including videos and a step by step checklist.  In fact they have designated the week of March 18-24 as Fix a Leak Week.  This is the week they encourage everyone to track down those pesky leaks in their home and get them fixed. And don’t forget the workplace!  Offices can be just as susceptible to water issues.  A great place to start is with the water meter.  Checking for water usage can help you determine if you have undetected leaks.

If you follow these steps and can’t get the leaks to stop it might be time to call a professional plumber.
