How to Get Rid of Pet Odors

Posted by

Pets are more than just pets, they’re family. They provide comfort, companionship, and fill your home with unconditional love. Unfortunately, they can often fill it with something else – pet odor.

If your fury friends are causing your home to smell less than stellar, follow these tips for freshening things up.

Air It Out – The best way to remove any odor is to allow fresh air to circulate throughout your home. Open some windows, even if it’s for a few minutes a day. Wash or air out pet bedding or replace it if need be.

Scrub Walls and Floors – Use a wood floor cleaner or an odor-neutralizing product on walls and floors to remove set-in odors.

Wash Upholstery – Launder, steam, or dry clean upholstery to remove pet odors that have seeped into fabric. To help keep odors at bay, learn to say “Off!” and mean it.

Clean Carpets and Rugs – Whether you take the DIY route or hire professionals, thoroughly wash your carpeting and area rugs to banish household odors. To deodorize, sprinkle a little baking soda on rugs before vacuuming.

Paint or Seal Walls – A fresh coat of paint not only transforms the look of a room but can erase pet and food odors. For cement or brick, apply a sealant suitable for the surface to prevent odors from escaping.

Control Urine Odors – Replace kitty litter daily and sweep up any litter around the box. If your pooch uses pee pads, put down a new, clean pad after your dog finishes its business.

Use Natural Scents – Use mild-smelling potpourri, scented candles, or make your own natural air freshener spray using one cup of water, two tablespoons of rubbing alcohol, and a few drops of your favorite essential oil.
