In 2023, the Department of Energy (DOE) released a new set of rules that aim to improve the energy efficiency of new HVAC units across the country. And if you’re planning on replacing your home comfort system this year, these regulations apply to you, too!

Here’s what you need to know about the DOE’s new HVAC regulations—and what they mean for your next home comfort system

Starting on January 1, 2023, all newly manufactured and installed HVAC systems in the Northern region of the US, including Nebraska, will be held to a higher SEER standard.

A SEER—which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio—refers to how efficiently an HVAC system cools a facility. The less energy it uses to create the same level of cooling, the higher its SEER rating. And in 2023, all Nebraska HVAC units must have a SEER rating of 14 or higher, up from 13 SEER in 2022.

There’s one more major DOE regulation change worth noting. Starting in 2023, the testing standards used to measure how efficiently an HVAC unit converts energy into cool air are changing. Now, units measured with the new testing method will earn a SEER2 rating—denoting the updated standards. You’ll see “SEER” phased out as “SEER2” becomes the new norm.

Why the big changes?

The DOE has been slowly working to lower nationwide home energy usage over the past few decades. And not just for HVAC systems! The DOE has been encouraging manufacturers to improve everything from windows and doors to appliances and furnaces.

Every few years, these regulations get a bit stricter as manufacturers develop better, more innovative systems with less wasted energy. And millions of homeowners stand to benefit.

This latest round of regulatory updates will further improve the footprint of new homes and upgraded systems across the country. And that’s good for our families and the future.

There’s another silver lining to this SEER increase—extra savings!

A higher SEER rating means your new HVAC unit will operate even more efficiently. And that lower energy usage can add up to high savings in 2023 and beyond. Especially for homes updating their system from an old HVAC unit to today’s ultra high-efficiency systems!

Plus, in 2023, some new HVAC systems are eligible for a tax credit of up to $600—further adding to your savings this year!

Better energy bills and greater comfort are just one call away

We know upgrading your HVAC system is a big decision. But lower energy bills, reliable home comfort, and the opportunity to cash in on extra tax credits make this a whole-home upgrade that’s worth the work!
