With autumn nearly upon us, it’s time to start thinking about fall home maintenance. In fact, as you tackle the usual to-dos, like putting the patio furniture away, clearing the gutters of debris, and stocking up on leaf bags, don’t forget to prepare your lawn is ready for the colder months ahead and, more importantly, next spring.
Don’t Stop Mowing – Water and mow your lawn as needed throughout the autumn months. Then, for the last two cuttings of the season, adjust the mower’s blade to its lowest setting, but don’t trim off more than one-third of the grass blades.
Aerate – Aerating your lawn in the fall allows oxygen, water, and fertilizer to easily reach the roots. If your lawn takes a beating by kids, guests, and pets, aerate it twice a year. Otherwise, once a year will suffice.
Rake Right Away – Remove fallen leaves from your lawn as soon as possible to prevent them from becoming sticky, wet, and forming an impenetrable mat that can suffocate the grass and breed fungal diseases.
Mulch Fall Leaves – A couple of times during the fall season, use a mulching attachment on your lawn mower to shred the fallen leaves. Mulch will turn into vital organic matter that will continue to nourish and protect your lawn through the winter.
Fertilize – If you’re going to fertilize your lawn just once a year, do it in the fall. A fall application of a quality fertilizer not only will deliver essential nutrients for the grass to grow deep roots now, but will help it keep nutrients on reserve for a healthy start come spring.
Reseed Bare Areas – Fall is a great time to fix any bare, bald spots in your lawn. Use a garden rake to loosen the soil at the bald spot, then spread a thick layer of lawn repair mixture over the area. Lightly compact the mixture, water thoroughly, and continue to water every other day for two weeks.
